Sweet Fried Dough

Yield: 1 pound

Whenever you have a hankering for the delicious buttery flavor of Boardwalk or County Fair sweet fried dough, make it at home. It's easy and healthier without deep, fat frying. (About 1¾ C oil will be left to reuse for many more batches). Store drained and cooled oil for another use.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups high-smoke point oil
  • 1 pound packaged all-purpose or pizza/bread dough ball
  • Honey and sprinkles
  • ½ cup cinnamon/sugar mix (3-1 ratio)

Directions

  1. Cut dough ball in half.
  2. On a floured surface, roll half of the dough ball ¼-inch thin. Stamp out stars with cookie cutters.
  3. Pull 1- inch pieces from remaining dough ball and roll into little balls about 1-inch in diameter or desired size.
  4. In a deep-sided skillet with Teflon™ nonstick coating, preheat oil on medium to 350 °F (177 °C). Use the wood skewer dip test if you don't have a thermometer*.
  5. Add dough in batches without crowding them in the pot; cook a few minutes until light brown and puffy for bombs, or crispy for stars, turning each bomb or star once.
  6. Remove with slotted spoon and drain on paper towel.
  7. Brush honey onto stars; add sprinkles.
  8. Shake balls in cinnamon/sugar mix in paper bag or fill with chocolate, jam, or another filling.

*Use this quick dip test to confirm the oil is hot enough. Dip a wooden skewer into the oil, and when tiny bubbles form around it, the oil has reached the correct temperature.
